Celie eventually learns that her abusive husband has been keeping her sister’s letters from her and the rage she feels, combined with an example of love and independence provided by her close friend Shug, pushes her finally toward an awakening of her creative and loving self.

Harpo vs. Sofia conflict.

The external conflict between the married couple is that Harpo and Sofia fight, not just verbally but physically as well.  Harpo has trouble trying to keep Sofia “mind” and under control because Sofia is the type to stand up for herself and not take anything from anyone especially from men.  Basically, Sofia beats Harpo up and he couldn’t do anything about it.

At this scene in the novel and film, Sofia states that she had to fight all her life, from her brothers to her father.  When she finds out that Celie told Harpo to try and beat Sofia, she was extremely angry.  She then left Harpo because of him trying to be the bigger person.

This is scene Shug Avery’s first comment said to Celie was “You Sho Is Ugly” when she first arrives at the house. Despite her sickness she seems well enough to confront Celie with such an harsh comment.

This Scene represents the affection Shug has gained for Celie since first entering the house. During this scene Shug sings a song she has personally made for Celie to show that she cares for her.
